5 Verses to Memorize on Self-Worth

The number in our bank account.

The amount of things we cross off our to do list.

Bachelor degrees, master degrees, and doctorates.

Marriage.

Children.

Job titles.

Home square footage and value.

Car models.

Friend groups.

These are the things the world wants to measure our worth by. In 2023, it is all to easy to compare and contrast our lives with others’ online. We see their photos, stories, and videos, and even if we wake up feeling confident in who we are, it can be instantly crushed. This person just built their “dream” home. Another finished their doctoral dissertation. Another just announced another pregnancy. Another shares about their promotion. Here we sit, thinking, “What have I even been doing with my life?” and instantly begin thinking less of ourselves based on the accomplishments of others.

Oh friend, I am right there with you! I’ve been digging myself out of the same pit of self doubt for the past couple of months. While I compare much less without Instagram, I have quickly learned that comparison is still something I fall into if I'm looking around too much. The issue with this self-doubt is that we start measuring our value and worth and children of God by earthly standards. We will fall short, because no one person is perfect and very few walk the same paths. We all get where we are going in different ways, and success is different for each individual. For some success is monetary, and for another it may be defined as simply getting through the day in one piece. We are not meant to find our value in earthly things once we have the Holy Spirit in our lives. Yet, we more often than not find ourselves feeling less than.

Today I want to share with you a few verses for us to memorize. These verses talk about where our worth is rooted, and that is in God and who He created us to be. When we place our value as a human in the hands of God, we know that our value is always the same because God never changes. If you are in the same boat as me, let’s memorize these verses over the next few weeks to bury in our hearts the truth of where our value lies.

ree

Philippians 2:13

for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

When we are evaluating our worth based on our own works, we will always fall short and feel less than. When we are our worth based on the fact that God is working in us for His goodness, we can feel confident in HIS ability to do well in us.

Matthew 6:26

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

God cares about every aspect of His creation. Even creatures in desolate places, like polar bears in the Arctic, are fed and taken care of. He cares so much more about the humans whom He has created that actually have the ability to serve and praise and spread His name. Base your worth not on the accomplishments you have but on the fact that you ARE.

1 Corinthians 6:20

for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

How easy it is to forget that our souls were bought with the blood of Christ. He suffered and died for us. If that does not remind you of your worth and value, nothing will.

Philippians 3:8

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

Accolades, accomplishments, degrees, money in the bank, these are all good things. However there is nothing compared to knowing Jesus. If you know Jesus, you have all and more than you will ever need in this life.

John 6:63

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Our worth is not found within ourselves. It is the Holy Spirit who blooms life in us, and the works of our flesh cannot accomplish this. Remember this when you feel like you have failed: the Spirit is working in you, and He will not stop, and He will not fail. He is life.

I pray that you would take some time to tuck these verses into you heart as you begin finding your worth and value in Jesus and who He made YOU to be.

Talk to you soon.
